This whole house remodel and multi year project started with a phone call in February. Deborah was looking for a builder to remodel her kitchen, laundry room, and two bathrooms and she had a limited budget. She wanted to get three estimates, choose a builder, and then have the work done in the summer when she would be there to oversee the progress.

To be fair, this project was a lot more complex than one might imagine and the budget was very tight. The house had been renovated many times over the years. It took quite a bit of sleuthing to figure out how the walls were supported and how the plumbing and electrical was configured.

We offered to design and price the project for a fixed price. Deborah agreed. Through this process, Deborah got to know us and we grew to trust Deborah and to really enjoy working with her.

It takes a lot of trust on both sides to work with someone solely by telephone and e mail. She decided to have us complete the entire project without ever meeting us in person and without being there to oversee the progress. We took a chance that she would be happy with the final result and pay for our work.

The initial call was made in February and the whole project was complete by June. Although we have completed several major projects with no oversight at all by the homeowner or designer/architect, we are always a bit tense wondering what the client will think when seeing the final result and meeting us for the first time. We knocked on the door, knowing that Deborah had had some time to thoroughly check everything over. She greeted us with a big smile, a hug for us both, and the final payment. Seeing our client’s happy face is the best part of this job.
Since then, we completed several other projects for Deborah including remodeling her bedrooms and living room. She has been working little by little as her budget allows. There are still a few more things on her wish list. We are helping her figure out how to get the best value from her remaining funds.
