A well planned barn or garage makes living in Maine a whole lot easier. They are so useful in so many ways. We can help you design and build a barn or a garage to meet your current and future needs. We will design it to blend in with your current or even your future home. More and more, clients want us to build a garage first, then their home.
Here is a list of the types of barns and garages we have built. Click on any highlighted text to see photos and for additional information about a specific project.
Post & Beam Barns
Post and beam is a traditional New England favorite. They are not only beautiful to look at but are sturdy enough to last for centuries. An old barn can look pretty bad but as long as the posts and beams are in good shape, it is absolutely worth salvaging. An architect once told us that they are so strong you could literally roll them downhill and they would remain intact. Click here and scroll down to the bottom of the page to see photos of an antique post and beam barn we re created from a heap of salvaged wood and a few photographs.
Traditional Garages
We design traditional garages of all shapes and sizes. This is a typical 26′ x 32′ garage with 8′ high doors and a 10′ high ceiling. It is a good size for people who have a lot of stuff to store. There is room upstairs for 700 bales of hay. You would not believe how much is stored below. It is possible with a little ingenuity to really pack your garage with bikes, boats, vehicles, recycling, a work bench, equipment etc. and still have room to walk around.
Garages with Living Space
Permanent Guest Quarters
The garage pictured above is a mixture of a garage with a permanent guest suite and a temporary home for the owners who will eventually build their dream home on their waterfront property. Here is a photo of what they did with the area which will later be used for parking cars. Click here to see more photos. The kitchen and bathroom are on the main level behind where the cars will be parked. The bedroom and flex space areas are on the upper level. The garage is well insulated with spray foam insulation. The owners report that they are very comfortable year round. They come up to Maine frequently in all seasons to enjoy their “temporary cottage”.
Temporary Living Space
This photo was taken immediately after construction. The owners subsequently did a really nice job of landscaping around it and turning it into a temporary home away from home. They come up to Maine from MA with family and friends multiple times each summer. The garage is a very comfortable living space with a 3/4 bath, a kitchen area, a living room, a sleeping area downstairs, a sleeping area upstairs, and a barbeque and picnic area outside in the garden. They have no regrets. This garage has enabled them to enjoy their property and save money until they are ready to move to Maine permanently.
